Everything happened fast after that. Declan’s men hauled Trapper out of the room and all but threw him into the waiting car. They told him the guns were in the trunk, but he wasn’t allowed to open it until he was within a mile of the target, and then they made sure he knew he was being watched.

They gave him the keys, but only after the passenger door opened and Kamila was forced inside. Trapper took off, looking at the GPS on the dashboard that was set to tell him where to go. They had given him twenty-four hours, and it was going to be a long drive.

They were a few miles away from Declan’s mansion before Kamila spoke. “I want you to know I had nothing to do with what happened.”

Trapper didn’t answer.

She sat silently for a few more minutes and then added, “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”

“Why are you here?” he snapped. His heart had been racing thinking about her in that room with Clay, and a now dead Judas. Then suddenly, here she was. He was fucking confused again and it was pissing him off.

“I don’t know. They didn’t tell me.”

“Did they tell you where we’re going?”

“They told me to make sure you followed the GPS. Other than that...”

“Did they tell you why we’re going?”

“You’re supposed to kill Blitz. Why they picked the two of us...”

“Yeah,” he said, silencing her. He knew why Declan was sending him, he was dispensable, but Kamila? Was she dispensable as well...or was she there to make sure he did what he was told? Maybe she was there to kill him if he didn’t.

Another hour passed before Kamila said, “I didn’t want any of this.”

Trapper didn’t respond again.

“God, will you say something?”

“We’ll have to stop for gas before too long,” he said.

“What are we going to do?”

“What do you think?”

“So we’re just going to kill that man and everything’s supposed to be hunky dory?”

Trapper turned his head and finally looked at her. He hated the cacophony of feelings that came along with that. “Why don’t you tell me?”

“We have to figure out a plan,” she said. “We have to do something.”

“I’m open to suggestions.”

“They’re going to kill us. You know that, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Then what the hell are we doing?”

“We’re driving.”

She sighed. “I get that you’re pissed, but this was not my idea.”

“Would it change anything if it was?” Trapper asked, keeping his eyes on the road then. Looking at her was too much, too hard.

“Yes!” Kamila protested. “I know I screwed up getting involved with them in the first place, and I know I made things worse going along with their plan to bring you guys in, but I didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”

“Then why’d you do it?”

“I didn’t have a choice!” she yelled.

“Oh, take some responsibility for yourself, will you?” he said, sarcastically. “Seems like every time we talk, you’re coming up with excuses why nothing you do is your fault, and I’m starting to get pretty sick of it.”

“They were going to kill me.
